“You are the light of the world.” |
—Matthew 5:14a |
When you walk along a path in the dark, you don’t put your flashlight in your pocket. You grip it tightly in your hand, turn the switch to “on,” and walk carefully, as the light reveals the hazards that might block your forward progress.
That is exactly what Jesus was telling His followers in Matthew 5:14-16:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
“Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
This new day, let’s not hide the light God has given us through His written Word and through the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Instead, let’s declare the goodness of the Lord. Let’s tell the world of God’s mercy, grace, and boundless love. Let’s allow the light of Christ to shine brightly through us to light the pathway of a needy world.
If we do this, people who need help finding their way through this ever-darkening world will be drawn to the light and will come to know the life-changing power of our Savior and Lord.
