Honoring Our Founders

[Painting of the Founders of the United States of America]

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…”
—Psalm 33:12a

We honor our Founding Fathers this day and remind ourselves of the heritage we have inherited from them. Perhaps the Psalmist put it best when he wrote these words from Psalm 33:12-15:

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.

From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth— he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.

With words by Samuel Francis Smith and music arranged by Thomas Arne, the heartfelt strains of “My Country ’Tis of Thee” fill our hearts and minds on this day of celebration.

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountainside
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom'’s holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.
