“Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly.” |
—Joel 1:14a |
“What are we going to do? Our nation seems doomed. What are we going to do?”
The hue and cry grows louder. More and more people have opened their eyes and realized that, as a nation, we are in very serious trouble. And, it’s not just the economy, uncontrolled illegal immigration, corruption in government agencies, or a host of other issues that are causing trouble. We have an ever-widening political, social, economic, and spiritual divide in our nation. The disunity has spawned a rancorous speech that widens the divide even more. The days of calm, rational, polite disagreements seem over. To thwart this awful condition, we need to approach each other with more civility and kindness.
So, what should we do? We can start by taking a cue from the Prophet Joel. Notice what he says in Joel 1:14:
Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.
As a people who follow the Lord Jesus Christ, isn’t it time we get serious? Isn’t it time that we lead the way toward a kinder, gentler, more loving conversation in all arenas of life? Isn’t it time we called for a sacred assembly and prayed earnestly for a great revival to sweep across our land?
