“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” |
—Isaiah 5:20 |
In recent days, we seem to constantly experience attempts by others to bend or distort the truth. In fact in many ways, it seems harder than ever to determine exactly what the truth is concerning a wide range of topics. Some of those topics can have a profound effect on our lives.
Television news programs offer a stunning example. Depending on a person’s particular political beliefs, one can find a television news program that supports that position, irrespective of the truth. A careful analysis of most news stores, as they are presented on television, discloses that, in the vast majority of cases, there is a bias in the presentation. Seldom does any individual on these news programs deal strictly with the truth of what is happening.
Even within the various denominations of Christian churches, it seems that the truth of what is happening within that denomination is difficult to discern. As our society has become more and more divided, so has the leadership and membership of our churches. No one seems dedicated to the truth. Everyone seems affected by their own biases.
The Prophet Isaiah has declared in Isaiah 5:20:
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
As followers of the Great King Jesus, we “Christ’s-ones” must be very careful that we do not fall into the trap of bending the truth to fit our own biases. Rather, we must seek to discern the truth and hold fast to that truth.
As we start off through another day, we should examine carefully what is absolutely true. We should depend on the leading of the Holy Spirit to help us diligently seek the truth and give us the ability to cling to that truth. When we are faced with lies, we should willingly declare them as false. This will allow us to continue on the best possible pathway for our lives.
