What are we going to do?

“Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly.”
—Joel 1:14a

“What are we going to do? Our nation, even our whole world, seems doomed. What are we going to do?”

The hue and cry grows louder. More and more people have opened their eyes and realized that, as a nation, we are in very serious trouble. And, it’s not just the COVID-19 pandemic that is causing trouble. We have an ever-widening political, social, economic, and spiritual divide in our nation. The disunity has spawned a rancorous speech that widens the divide. The days of calm, rational, polite disagreements seem over. In place of name-calling rhetoric, we need to approach each other with more civility and kindness.

So, what should we do? We can start by taking a cue from the Prophet Joel. Notice what he says in Joel 1:14:

Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.

As a people who follow the Lord Jesus Christ, isn’t it time we get serious? Isn’t it time that we lead the way toward a kinder, gentler, more loving conversation in all arenas of life?
