God-given Competence

[Graphic that describes the components of competenc]

“…our competence comes from God.”
—2 Corinthians 3:5b

The word “competence” seems highly charged in our world today. At every turn, people are looking for competence: competent auto mechanics, competent restaurant workers, competent contractors, competent employees, competent leaders, competent… Well, you get the idea.

For those who belong to Jesus, the Apostle Paul insists that God is the One who gives competence. Notice these words of Paul from 2 Corinthians 3:4-6:

Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Let us live this day with boldness of mind and heart, knowing that God has made us competent to do whatever He wills for us to do. Our strength and our competence comes to us as a gift from God, who loves us with His eternal love. The Holy Spirit gives us all we need to live competent lives. Let us rejoice that the God we serve is a giver of competence.
